Definition of VoIP
Definition of VoIP - Voice Over
Internet Protocol. Voice Over IP is technology for digitizing
a person's voice and sending that digital information
(data packets) over the Internet. Another definition
of VoIP is - the digital process of making and receiving
voice transmissions over any IP network including the
Internet, LANs, WLANs and private data networks such
as intranets.
Depending upon whom you ask,
the definition of VoIP can be as varied as the products
and services associated with VoIP itself. We've provided
some additional VoIP information to help clarify what
is and what is not VoIP.
IP
telephony is another term associated with defining
VoIP. IP telephony data transmissions avoid the
traditional circuit-committed protocols of the
public switched telephone network (PSTN). The
major advantage of VoIP is that it avoids the
toll costs associated with the PSTN networks providing
deep discounts to businesses and consumers alike.
Thus VoIP threatens the traditional distance and
time-based pricing model that most telecoms currently
employ.
Pronounced "voyp,"
VoIP is the process of passing digitized voice traffic
over the Internet rather than by using traditional telecom
POTS circuits. By using the Internet, VoIP offerings
are typically at a fixed monthly fee for unlimited long
distance services.
VoIP uses a standard called H.323,
which has been approved by the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) to promote compatibility in data transmissions
over networks and provide guaranteed quality of service
(QoS). Quality of Service
is the idea that transmission rates, error rates, and
other characteristics can be measured, improved, and,
to some extent, guaranteed in advance.
Besides the end-user hardware
and software that may be involved in Internet telephony,
the digitalized voice data packets are necessarily sent
to a VoIP server first before the information is forwarded
to the message receivers.
